About Adapted Books

Books that are enhanced, not changed, for increased durability, accessibility, and increased engagement.

“By adapting books in the library, my child had a place in the world of storytelling, where his experience was just as valued as anyone else’s.”

-Amanda McNew, Parent of a Reader with a Significant Disability

What Is an Adapted Book?

Adapted books are published books that have been modified to increase accessibility for readers with disabilities. They are laminated, rebound, and have sensory items added to each page. These adaptations make reading more interactive, engaging, and equitable for individuals who may not be able to access books in traditional ways.

“Adapted books helped improve access to library books for my students with significant disabilities by providing an appropriate and engaging library section that is inclusive to all types of learners. Adapted books allow students to experience stories in a way that is most beneficial to their unique learning needs. The responses we saw from our students through smiles, laughs, vocalizations, turning their heads towards an illustration, and touch showed full engagement in the library lesson, which is something I had not witnessed before.”

-Katie Horne, Special Education Teacher

Who Are Adapted Books For?

Adapted books were originally developed by and for special education teachers working with students who have:

  • Intellectual or developmental disabilities
  • Physical disabilities affecting mobility or fine motor skills
  • Sensory processing differences
  • Visual impairments or dual sensory loss
  • Communication needs, including nonverbal learners

However, adapted books can be and are enjoyed by all!

“With traditional library books, pages were getting ripped and my child was not really interested in them because there were no sensory aspects.”

-Jennifer, Parent of a Reader with a Significant Disability

Why Are Adapted Books Important?

They provide:

  • Equitable Access: Readers can experience the same stories their peers enjoy, in a format that works for them.
  • Increased Engagement: Sensory items make reading fun and meaningful.
  • Inclusive Opportunities: Books that are adapted open the door to shared reading, family engagement, and inclusive programming.
